Haemodialysis (abr. HD) is in many parts of the world the most common form of dialysis for patients with chronic renal failure. In haemodialysis blood is taken out of the body and through an artificial kidney - the dialyzer - where it is purified. Inside the dialyzer the blood comes in contact with a special dialysis fluid. The blood and the fluid are kept separated by a thin semipermeable membrane through which excess fluid and uremic toxins may pass. For most patients the dialysis procedure takes 4-5 hours, and has to be repeated three times a week. Other forms of haemodialysis are haemodiafiltration (HDF) and haemofiltration (HF).
